Favorite Summon

Postby Dergyll on 28 Aug 2008, 20:57

Hey guys, just wondering what your favorite creature is...

Mine is skelies. Low HP but high attack power. Back in the days of the last level of the second island (the maze) my skeleton (with 1/8 hp left!) managed to defeat 2 gators after falling down under the wooden bridge part! I know it sounds impossible but its the truth.

After getting enough mana, skelies can be mass-produced to be wizard fodders. They can eat through anything in packs, except perhaps a lord or king unit or Overlord who chain-lightnings often.

Enough rambling, whats YOUR favorite unit? :D

Skeletons are powerful.
Unfortunately, setting them up is difficult. It's not easy to summon a horde of skeletons to perfectly surround the enemy wizard, unless he's near a wall, or inside a building.

If he's out in the open, good luck.

My favorite is wraiths.
Even though damage wise, it's not as much as skeletons, the fact they're invisible means they can be used for:
(a) ambush
(b) scouting
(c) annoying (invisible bombs with lucifer)
(d) first strike - enemy cannot attack your wraiths until you strike first
(e) hidden mana battery - used with unsummon, you can camp the wraits somewhere remote and safe

Wraiths has far less damage compared to skeletons. But you can balance this out using inferno.
Wraiths work extremely well with inferno, since they're immune to fire.
If they're in middle of battle, toss inferno to support them.
Any creatures they're fighting will get toasted by inferno.
This works extremely well, if you have an enemy wizard surrounded.

My personal fvourite is the phoenix

Relatively low mana cost (especially whem you play the unpatched version of the game),
usable for scouting and occupying place of power on high walls (in levels like Joyous Guard or Thebes),
When you kill one you get a free infernoshower, which does great damage. This makes them flying inferno bombs.
A flock of 3 or 4 phoenixes can conquer easily a PoP when guarded by a large cereature such as crocodiles, vampires, trolls, and even champs of law and chaos.
They are excellent mage killers. As soon as any opponent runs out of mana, you can suroound your target by a flock. If he escapes, you can hold him in place with the levitate spell and the flock can still attack the enemy wizzard, since phoenixes can fly! No escape possible.
There only weakness is their low magical resistance, so their minds are easy to controll with the subversion spell.

Last week, in a 3hour long battle against the overlord on wizzard difficulty (unpatched version) this proved for me to be the best strategy to inflict a bit of damage to this powerplaying bastard. The chaos lord's lucifer spell was easily removed by disenchant or burry, when he casted it on undead creatures, which happens often. I managed to use the neutral lord's chain lighting spell in my own advantage, since it triggerded the phoenix bombs even moren faster. The lord of law was a bigger problem. Often he used judgement to scatter my flock of phoenixes. In this way there inferno bomb was not triggered. So the only possibility was to send in one after the other. Unfortunately he mindcontrolled one out of 2 or 3 phoenixes, so it took ages to kill him. But in the end it worked. Probably in version 1.1 this tactic will cost tons of mana. I will try this soon.

Favorite summon clearly is Unicorn

They are very stubborn, easy to make "Prince" or "King" with Excalibur. They have more base speed then most units and with haste on them they can easily outrun or attack any creature. If you controll 3 "Princes" or "Kings" with Excalibur, you can devour anything if you have 2-3 PoP's and heal spell. That is why i love them ;)

Skeletons are my favourite...no doubt about that!

Trolls and Manticores with Excalibur are great too, and can fight pretty well against undead. Huge HP :)

Champion of Law's freeze is extremely useful to "1-hit KO" flying creatures and other creatures...definitely > Champion of Chaos!

Unicorns are great too, but have too low hp...
